Ms. Harrison has consistently delighted me with her Elder Races series, which made the let-down of this story a bit sad for me. It was beautifully written and I liked both the characters and what little of the world we saw, but the ending was almost a deal-breaker for me. I read the PRN genre because I love a happy ending and this story just didn’t have one. I will keep the faith in hoping that the rest of this story is just left untold. While this story did not have a happy ending, it did not have a sad one; perhaps someday this shard of shadow will be woven into the greater tapestry and it will become a better work of art because of it. But for the present, I am merely saddened. I look with hope to the next full length novel that maybe it will embody the joy that the incomplete ending of this work left me missing.
